About MIdlife Credo
No Crisis!
My name is Alison Moore Smith. I'm a 60-year-old woman, married for over 39 years to the man of my dreams, mom to six amazing kids (all adults), and Lolly to two wonderful boys. Perfect, right?
Wrong.
As a homeschool mom of over 27 years, my fifth child graduated in the spring of 2018. Suddenly I was thrust into an odd space. Having gone from working in my home tech business while homeschooling a high schooler, a middle schooler, two elementary schoolers, a pre-schooler, and a toddler in 2004 to homeschooling one very independent high schooler (about 1.5 years ahead of grade) and being far less interested in designing websites for other people, I felt at a loss.
With my youngest son's graduation looming and dissatisfied with my former business model, I was completely unsure what to do with the second half of my life. (Assuming, of course, my imminent demise occurs at 108.)
Is this what they call a midlife crisis? Maybe.
After a couple of weeks spent with much crying and angst—and feeling like a complete loser with nothing to offer—I picked myself up off the chaise and started to make a new life plan.
I'm still working on it, but it gets better every day. I'm setting goals, checking things off my bucket list, and seeing possibilities in life I had never considered. Sure, we are older and more wrinkled. So what? We are alive! We have far more experience to draw on! We are smarter! And most of us have more resources to draw on than we did as struggling college students.
If you're feeling that midlife malaise, no excuses! Join me in the process of midlife transformation and reinvention. It is going to be a great ride!
The trick is to age honestly and gracefully and make it look great so that everyone looks forward to it.
