Family Matters: Why Homeschooling Makes Sense

David Guterson

This is the second homeschooling book I ever read. (The first being the red one I naively checked out at the library, as mentioned in the book.) The author was a public school teacher who chose to homeschool his own children. The lesson of this is not that you need an education degree to homeschool. A great introduction to alternative education.

Dumbing Us Down: The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling

John Taylor Gatto

Don't assume that the author is a tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorist. Gatto was, instead, New York City “Teacher of the Year” in 1989, 1990, and 1991, and New York State “Teacher of the Year” in 1991. And then he told parents to take back education and learning because conventional schooling is driving the the natural curiosity and problem solving skills out of children.
